Abstract

Aims: To verify the psychometric qualities of Quality of Life (QL) and orofacial pain instruments when applied to dental patients and evaluate the contribution of socio-demographic variables, general quality of life and orofacial pain to oral health-related quality of life. Methods: One thousand adult patients (1,000) who seek dental attendance at the Araraquara School of Dentistry - UNESP, in the years from 2012 and 2013 will participate in the study. Information will be collected on the socio-demographic, clinical, general quality of life, oral and orofacial pain aspects of patients' lives. As measurement instruments the questionnaires Short-form 36 health survey (SF-36), Oral health impact profile - 49 (OHIP-49), and the Multidimensional Pain Inventory (MPI) will be used. Reliability of the instruments will be estimated by Cronbach's Coefficient Alpha. The face, content, construct and criterion validity will be estimated. For construct validity, the factorial, convergent and discriminant validities will be estimated, and for the criterion-related validity, the concurrent and divergent validity will be estimated. Confirmatory factor analysis will be performed using x2/df, CFI, GFI and RMSEA. Convergent validity will be estimated by the average variance extracted (AVE) and composite reliability (CR). The discriminant, concurrent and divergent validities will be evaluated by means of correlational analysis. The relationship between the variables of interest will be studied by structural equation modeling where the oral health-related quality of life will be the central construct. (AU)
