Abstract

Based on the premise that weaning stress can be minimized by chrome supplementation, the present study proposes to determine the effect of prior supplementation of chrome in suckling calves and observe how this addition affects the performance and metabolism of animals during and following the weaning forced period and also to consider how the weaning stress influence on the increase of chrome urinary excretion. 100 calves age between 6-7 month were divided 60 days before the weaning day in two groups of 50 animals (G1 and G2). During the experiment the calves will be kept in paddocks containing system with creep feeding troughs. The G1 will receive a supplement sample containing protein salt (20 per cent of crude protein plus macro and micro elements without chrome) added of 3 mg of chrome/kg/DM in the form of chromo carbo-amino-phospho-chelated. The G2 (control) will receive the same diet without any addition of chrome supplement. During 4 months both groups will be presumed a supplement consumption between 200 to 250 g of protein salt which will be assumed by the group to receive chromium correspond between 0.6 to 0.75 mg/chrome/day. During the experiment period calves will be weighed at the beginning of the experiment M0 (60 days before weaning), M1 (time of weaning), M2 (48 hours after weaning) and M3 (60 days after weaning). During all times it will be also be collected blood and urine samples in tubes which will be taken to laboratory where blood serum will be analyzed for glucose, creatinine, cortisol, insulin and chromium as well as chromium and creatinine urine concentrations which together with the individual body weight of each animal, will allow to calculate the Index Urinary Excretion of Chromium (IEUCr).
