Abstract

Lead is broadly known as an ubiquitous and highly toxic metal to human health. In Brazil, there are scarce data on lead contamination among the general population, especially in the more vulnerable population composed by preschool children. The aims of this study are: a) to estimate the blood lead levels in children attending Day Care Centers (DCCs) from municipality of São Paulo; b) to correlate the blood lead levels with the location of DCCs and c) to analyze the association between high lead levels found in venous blood and risk factors present in the home and school settings. This study will include 26 DCCs, totalizing around 2,400 children aged 1-3 years. A questionnaire will be applied to parents or guardians to obtain socioeconomic and demographic information and investigating potential risk factors to lead contamination in children's homes. DCCs also will be checked and potential risk factors found will be registered in a specific form. Venous blood samples will be collected from all the study children, whose parents or guardians have signed the informed consent term, to estimate the lead concentrations. Venous blood samples will be analyzed by GF AAS. All the analysis will be performed in the Applied Spectrometry Laboratory (ASL) of the Chemistry Institute of the University of São Paulo and 10% of the blood samples will be analyzed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for comparison between laboratories. Descriptive Statistics, correlation tests and Multiple Regression Analysis will be applied to data. (AU)
