Incidence of bovine mastitis in the post-partum: influence of the immune response and the mastitis control programs

Abstract

The present study aimed to evaluate the metabolic and endocrine alterations during the transition period, and associated them with the immune response dysfunction and the incidence of mastitis, as well as, to evaluate the use of teat sealants and dry cow therapy in the incidence of mastitis in the post-partum period. Thus, 30 dairy cows will be used and divided uniformily into three groups: animals that will receive teat sealants in all quarters at drying-off, dairy cows that will receive dry cow therapy in all quarters at drying-off and animals that will be not treated (control group). Milk samples will be collect to bacteriological analysis, automatic somatic cell count, differential leukocytes count, California Mastitis Test, e milk composition - protein, lactose, fat, total solid contents and urea. Furthermore, blood samples will be collect to evaluate the neutrophil oxidative metabolism, measurement of immunoglobulins, and also the determination of glucose, urea, creatinine, insulin, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, gama-glutamyltransferase, calcium, phosphorus, triacylglycerol, cholesterol, low-density, high-density lipoprotein, ²-hidroxybutyrate, nonesterified fatty acids and albumin. Urine will be collected to evaluate the presence of sediments, color, odor, aspect, density, pH and the presence of proteins, glucose, leukocytes, blood, ketones, bile pigments and nitrite. (AU)
