Abstract

The rapid increase in the adoption of wireless devices is impressive in the last decade. As a consequence, there is an increase for more date rate and more quality of service. To fulfill these requirements the ultra wideband technology (UWB), which promises data rates of the order of giga bits per second, has been created and standardized. The electronic devices that were wired now will be able to have wireless connection through the UWB technology. On the one hand, UWB allows devices to communicate to each other at high date rates, but on the other hand, new challenges are found to provide all the available potential. One of new challenges is the huge channel bandwidth. The new channel has different gains for different frequencies, that is, it is not flat anymore but frequency selective. The adoption of MIMO (multiple input multiple output) has been suggested in order to mitigate the effect of the frequency selective channel. This work is an extension of an ongoing work at Stanford University (CA - USA) for the period of one and a half year over the guidance of Prof. John Cioffi. This work has also been performed with the collaboration of Prof. Zhengyuan Xu (California University at Riverside) and Prof. Olivier Lévêque (EPFL - Switzerland). This project aims to find the channel capacity of the UWB channel including all new effects of this channel in SISO (single input - single output) systems and also in MIMO systems. (AU)
