Abstract

The upper tropospheric synoptic scale cyclonic vortices induce rainfall over northeast Brazil. It is proposed to investigate barotropic stability characteristics of representative zonal and non-zonal flows in the upper troposphere before the vortex formation. Computed spatial and temporal scales, structure, energetics and transports associated with the preferred unstable modes will be compared with observations. A 3-layer linear, equatorial beta plane, barotropic primitive equation model and a global barotropic primitive equation model over sphere will be used for the proposed studies. It is suggested to use eigenvalue as well as initial value approaches to determine unstable modes. It is expected that the proposed studies will provide a dynamical framework to understand genesis, intensification and movement of cyclonic vortex over northeast Brazil. (AU)
