Abstract
The proposed visit will include the participation of Professor Tall in activities in five academic centres in Brazil, each one composed of academics with proven records in the area of Mathematics Education. The chronogram of planned activities will involve him in a variety of contribution of different natures: seminars, lectures, participation in research projects and the elaboration of papers. Professor Tall's visit is planned to coincide with moments crucial to each institution, although for different reasons. With respect to UNIBAN, David Tall's visit will occur during the first semester of the new Masters Program. The researcher is currently developing a theoretical framework for the understanding of processes involved in the learning of mathematics which specifically aims to support equally university researchers and Mathematics teachers in classrooms. He proposes theoretical constructs in a language appropriate to both communities, hence searching to more directly ground connections between research and practice. Rosana Nogueira de Lima, one of the teaching staff at UNIBAN, is one of the members of the collaboration team in the development of these ideas. Time is set aside during the visit for the analysis of new evidence currently being collected. In UFRJ, the Masters program in mathematics education is also relatively new. Professor Tall influenced the discussions leading to the initial proposal of this program and his visit at this moment is likely to be particularly beneficial to continue the consolidation of the group. His visit will also coincide with the 4th Colloquium on History and Technology in the teaching of Mathematics, where he has been invited to contribute to one of the plenary events. In Recife, the visit also occurs at the moment in which a new Masters Program is opening. The ample contributions of Professor Tall on previous visits indicate that the planning of the courses for this program will be significantly shaped by his visit. In Belo Horizonte, the working plan involves the visitor in collaborating with two different institutions and participation in the First Conference in Mathematics Education for Higher Education. Throughout the visit, time has been reserved for collaboration with individual researchers in all the institutions and for discussion of the conception of publications and joint projects. Previous visits from this renowned researcher have results in a number of quality publications in international conferences and international journal. We are confident that this visit will be no different. David Tall is one of the most eminent figures in the Mathematics Education community worldwide and we are most honored that he has accepted in principal the invitation to vist Brazil which has led to this solicitation for financial support.
