Abstract

This project aims to obtain financial support for Dr. Bruce T. Tsurutani, from Jet Propulsion Laboratory - JPL/NASA, for a short term visit (8 days) to the Universidade do Vale do Paraíba (UNIVAP). During this visit a study on the origin, evolution and propagation of magnetic decreases in the interplanetary magnetic field observed by Ulysses spacecraft at the external heliosphere (4-5 AU) will be developed. The visiting researcher will held scientific discussions with the local group about the results of recent collaborative efforts on this topic. These discussions will involve researchers form the Magnetosphere and Heliosphere research group from UNIVAP as well as researchers from the MAGHEL research group from INPE. The study consist in the analysis of the interplanetary magnetic field data obtained by Ulysses during years 1992-1993, when located in the external heliophere (2-5 UA) and at low heliospheric latitude (<20º). The main objective is the identification of the mechanisms related to the magnetic decreases formation. The two main candidate mechanisms are wave steepening and mirror mode instabilities. The analysis will be focused in periods during the passage of completely developed corotating interaction regions (CIRs), which are structures bounded by a pair of frontal-reverse shocks. These results will be used for simple theoretical modeling of non-linear wave propagation to check the possibility of magnetic decreases formation in the interplanetary regions, and compare them with the formation mechanisms close to the Earth (~ 1 AU). Scientific articles will be prepared for future submission to international journals. (AU)
