Abstract

Course syllabus and outline of field work in support of Marina Munerato's PhD arrive May 15 2009, Course work: May 17-18. Topics: 1. Pharmacology of wildlife capture drugs. This section will cover commonly used wildlife capture drugs including alpha-2 agonists, opioids, phenothiazines, benzodiazepines and antagonist drugs. 2. Reduction of stress and injury during wildlife capture. This section will focus on methods to refine capture techniques and reduce the risk of trauma and stress during wildlife capture and handling. 3. Treatment of common complications encountered during wildlife capture. This section will focus on the recognition and treatment of hypoxemia, hypercarbia, acidosis, shock, capture myopathy, hyperthermia, hypothermia and GI stasis. 4. Respiratory physiology and oxygen therapy. This section will be devoted to respiratory physiology applicable to wildlife anesthesia, and mechanisms to provide supportive care during respiratory compromise. Field work: May 20st-June 14. During the field season we will use the material learned in the course work to illustrate examples in the live animal, besides it will be performed a trainee on cervids capture and management. (AU)
