Abstract
This Project aims the financial support for a 2 months visit of Dr. Gurbax Singh Lakhina (Indian Institute of Geomagnetism). The scientific goal is to discuss and interpret results of magnetic decreases (MDs) analyses and the energetic particle cross-field diffusion. This study will use Ulysses magnetic field data at ~4-5 AU. The guest scientist will have scientific discussions with the scientific staff of the research section Magnetosfera/Heliosfera (MAGHEL) of the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE). This work is part of a computational and theoretical study of the energetic particle interaction with MDs. The computer model was a theme of a PhD thesis supervised by the responsible researcher, Dr. Echer (Edio da Costa Jr, 2010). The guest researcher (Dr. Lakhina), has been working with Dr Echer and collaborators in several papers regarding MDs (i.e, Tsurutani et al., 2009, 2010, 2011; Costa Jr. et al., 2011). A computer simulation based on the Monte Carlo technique was developed in the Costa Jr. PhD Thesis. The model studies the energetic particle cross-field diffusion by nonresonant interaction. However, there are also several models about resonant diffusion (wave-particle interaction). The main goal of the visit is to study both methods, taking into account the large research experience of Dr. Lakhina. It is also an objective of the visit starting drafts of scientific papers for publication and presentation in conferences. Dr. Lakhina will give seminars for the students of the Space Geophysics Post-Graduate program of INPE. (AU)
