Abstract
The lecture/seminar, as proposed by the visiting professor, aims to offer a panorama of the works of Manoel de Oliveira having as an analytic perspective the relations among literature, theater and cinema established within those works. Beyond a comprehensive approach to Oliveira's filmography, which will take into consideration the totality of the cinematographic production of the most important and acclaimed Portuguese filmmaker - a bit more than fifty movies released throughout eighty years of work, from the early 1930s until present -, it will be also intended to define and characterize the main lines of continuity and the most important cleavage points that guided the director's research with the purpose to highlight some of the singular characteristics of his trajectory. The analysis and critical contextualization of these structuring principles and crisis moments will have as primary basis the filmic objects, which will be complemented, when possible, with Manoel de Oliveira's statements about the reorientations he has been giving to his works. This will lead to the proposal of a period segmentation for Oliveira's works under a chronological and historical perspective of the main changes in his trajectory - being these changes either in the aesthetic viewpoint or in the thematic, theoretical or other changes in his perspectives - in order to comprehend in all its multitude the motivations, circumstances and consequences that may explain the director's interest for the cinematographic approach of the literary and theatrical texts.
