Microparticles and nanoparticles in atherosclerosis: from atherogenesis to treatment

Abstract

In human atherosclerotic plaques has been described the presence of large amounts of microparticles (MPs), vesicles coated with membrane that have pro-coagulant and pro-inflammatory properties that can induce endothelial and vascular dysfunction as well as platelet activation, and influence in various cellular functions, including inflammatory response, so that combating it could indicate a new therapeutic approach to atherosclerosis. The PTCTS is a new drug consisting of antioxidants nanoparticles and transialidase enzyme which has an anti-atherosclerotic and anti-lipemiante effect connected to the elimination of microparticles with oxidative action and neutralization of the heightened inflammation induced by sialic acid. Methods: We will study first 36 New Zealand rabbits, approximately 60 days of age, males and females, weighing 2.2 ± 0.5 kg to be fed with specific species and water ad libitum. The number of rabbits can increase until the result presents significance. These animals are divided into six groups with different forms of treatment for 12 weeks, will have blood samples collected for biochemical determination of total cholesterol and fractions and liver enzymes AST and ALT, and then be sacrificed for morphological evaluation boards and collecting material for and morphological characterization, molecular and physico-chemistry of MPs.
