This is a four-month project entitled Synthesis of Superconducting (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+y (Bi-2223) by Spark Plasma Sintering. The objectives are to produce high-quality Bi-2223 materials by using the spark plasma sintering SPS technique, for a better understanding of their normal and superconducting properties. The core project is two-fold: (1) to produce pellet samples of Bi-2223 with very high densities, higher than ~95 % of the theoretical value, by using the SPS technique; and (2) to achieve superconducting critical current density of ~ 103 A/cm2 at 77 K in the SPS materials. The samples will be characterized by several techniques and the results analyzed within the framework of current theories and previous experimental results. (AU)
