Study of the experimental oral infection with oocysts of Neospora caninum (Nc-1 and Nc-Bahia isolates) in young and adult chicken (Gallus domesticus): serologic and parasitologic responses

Abstract

Neospora caninum is an apicomplexan protozoa, heteroxenous and eurixenous, causing neuromuscular diseases in dogs and abortions in cattle. Domestic dogs, coyotes and dingos are considered definitive hosts. These hosts are infected by ingesting tissues of infected intermediate hosts, and they excrete non-sporulated oocysts that become infectious at the environment. Research works showed that chickens are associated to a larger prevalence of infected cattle and abortions in herds. Molecular and serologic studies showed that chickens can be infected by N. caninum, however there is no experiments using oral inoculation with N. caninum oocysts, that as occurs with Toxoplasma gondii, probably is the natural way of infection. This present project has the objective of diagnosing the experimental oral infection by N. caninum oocysts of Nc-1 and Nc-Bahia isolates in young and adult chickens (Gallus domesticus), comparing serologic, biologic and molecular techniques. This study will contribute to the knowledge about the epidemiology of neosporosis and the role of the birds in the epidemiology of this disease. (AU)
