Abstract

Although studied in economy, sociology and anthropology, there are a few of works about consumption in history area. Nevertheless, the consumption is an important instrument of analysis of the capitalism and of its dynamic. While connecting two dimensions, the economical one and the cultural one, it allows the interpretation of the class conflicts besides the sphere of the production, enlarging the means of study of the historical materialism. Connecting with the productive sphere, during the social process of differentiation and massification, the consumption allows the understanding of the specificities that characterize the capitalism in its different national manifestations. The consumption is, so applied in this work like a comprehension instrument of the formation of the peripheral capitalism. In order to do it, we take the example of Sao Paulo in the passage of the Century XIX for the XX. (AU)
