Development of spectroanalytical methods for direct analysis of waste electrical and electronic equipments and cosmetics

Abstract

Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is an emerging analytical technique that allows the direct analysis of solid samples. The combination of total LIBS spectra profile and chemometric strategies can lead to analytical methods able to identify toxic elements in solid samples. This approach is intended to be applied for waste electrical and electronic equipments (WEEE) and cosmetic analysis. Old mobiles phones, personal computers accessories (mouse, keyboards, integrated circuits, among others) will be tested. During the experimental work, several spectra from different equipments will be recorded and the total peak profile will be applied to build classification models aiming the identification of fabricant and source. In the case of cosmetics, samples like lipsticks, facial base, and eye shadow will be used and in parallel these samples will be analyzed using the spectroanalytical techniques already available in our laboratory (ICP-MS, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and FAAS, flame atomic absorption spectrometry, for example). The goal is with the use of LIBS spectra and elements' concentration obtained by FAAS and ICP-MS to build calibration models using chemometric tools like PLS (Partial Least Squares). The proposed project can offer a current scenario of the WEEE and cosmetics commercialized in Brazil with potential impact to support recycling programs and critical information for public health.
