Infection of herpesviruses and the susceptibility in thyroid cancer

Abstract

The differentiated thyroid carcinoma has significantly increased its incidence in recent years and is considered by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as the fourth most prevalent tumor in women. However, there are important differences in prevalence that can not be attributed solely to differences in the efficiency of the health system or other ecological factors. Environmental risk factors, such as exposure to ionizing radiation, chemicals and iodine intake in the diet may contribute to the observed differences. In addition, many viruses are important in the predisposition to various types of human malignancies. Our group has already demonstrated the relationship Human Herpesvirus type 6 and Human Herpesvirus type 7 in autoimmune thyroid diseases such as Graves' disease. There are also experimental evidence that Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 may be related to the differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Thus, this project aims to identify the presence of infection of Herpes Simplex Virus type 2, Epstein-Baar, Cytomegalovirus and Human Herpesvirus type 8 in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma and control group and seek evidence of its relationship with the disease and their characteristics clinics. To analyze both the presence of viral DNA in 100 individuals with thyroid nodules malignant patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma and 100 benign nodules (adenoma and goiter). Our group has been working with herpes virus for some time and a pilot study suggested that HHV-8 viral DNA may exist in tumor tissue of patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma. We believe that the completion of this project is very important to clarify the role of herpes viruses in human thyroid malignancy. (AU)
