Abstract

Metabolic and immune systems are among the basic requirements for survival and interaction between them is decisive to the health and survival of the organism. Obesity and its metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance and diabetes, are associated with inflammatory conditions and are currently being associated with changes in intestinal flora. The role of new drugs such as antibiotics, probiotics and antiinflammatory for obesity treatment and insulin resistance in relation to the intestinal flora is still unknown. The drug discovery involves a lengthy and costly process, and seldom has expanded the therapeutic power of the above. Thus, the use of drugs now used in clinical medicine can be another alternative treatment to that which the drug has been manipulated, as well as confirmation by scientific methods of plants used by popular wisdom. Given this fact, the proposal is to test a known drug and a popularly used plant by examining their actions on obesity, insulin resistance and intestinal microbiota. (AU)
