Abstract

Patellar instability is a common pathology in the practice of knee surgeons. There is now a consensus that the main stabilizing factor in the patellofemoral joint is the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL). This ligament is the most important structure to be reconstructed during a surgery for patellofemoral instability. The study of this joint is traditionally made with static imaging. With the recent development of new tomographers for cardiac imaging, it is now possible to analyse anatomical structures moving in real time. This technique (dynamic CT) has not yet been used to study joints as the knee. We designed this study with the purpose of standardizing the use of dynamic CT for the patellofemoral joint, analysing patients before and after surgical reconstruction of MPFL with a never used before method, and developing a computer software that allows interpretation and analysis of this CT. We'll select 10 patients with patellofemoral instability referred to surgery for MPFL reconstruction, and they'll be submitted to a dynamic CT before and another 6 months after surgery. The abnormalities found before surgery, and the changes induced by the surgery will be registered and described by the software that'll be developed during the project. (AU)
