Synthesis and characterization of functional materials containing aromatic imides

Abstract

The project consists in the construction of self-assembled films of zirconium phosphonate containing the yellow fluorescent dye 4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide (ANI). For that purpose, ANI derivatives substituted with either free phosphonic acid or phosphonic ester groups will be synthesized. Film growth will be carried out by depositing the dye on the surface of different substrates, such as quartz, gold, silicon or ITO. A three-step deposition scheme will be employed in order to obtain non-centrosymmetric films, which will be tested as non-linear optic devices. The films will be characterized by several techniques, such as UV/visible absorption, fluorescence spectroscopy, electrochemistry, ellipsometry and contact angle. Besides the pure ANI films, mixed films consisting of alternated layers of ANI and NDI (1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimides) will also be grown. These films will be studied as materials for the harvesting of solar energy. (AU)
