Abstract

Depressive disorders are the leading cause of burden on developing countries in young people aged from 10-24 years old. Health professionals from the Brazilian Familial Health Program were not trained to recognize or treat these symptoms. The lack of trained physicians and high cost of medication make the use of antidepressants unfeasible. Therefore, an evidence-based psychotherapy was considered a reasonable treatment option by a team of health researchers familiar with the local culture, who designed a randomized controlled clinical trial. Interpersonal psychotherapy Evaluation, Support, Triage format (IPT-EST) was selected because it was time limited, described in a manual, and had some evidence of efficacy from clinical trials. Moreover, its focus on interpersonal triggers of MDD was considered compatible with the culture. The trial will compare a 4-week IPT-EST to treatment as usual (TAU) for 240 caretakers of children aged up to 12 years old with depressive disorder. This paper describes the rationale for and the design of the study, which may have important public health benefits for some of Brazil's most socially and health-deprived citizens (AU)
