Abstract

The prevalence of overweight is increasing in Brazil and is an important risk factor for several chronic diseases and may result in higher health costs. Objective: To evaluate the influence of overweight and obesity in household expenditures on health, considering the total expenditure, and its fractions, drug spending and spending on health care, the Brazilian families, using data from the Consumer Expenditure Survey of IBGE 2008-2009. Methods: Data were collected from the 2008-2009 HBS by the IBGE, in a probability sample of 55,970 households, which are used as the unit of study. Will be analyzed information regarding the nutritional status of adults living in the household and the records of purchases of pharmaceuticals and health care services. To assess the influence of overweight and obesity on health care cost (with product, services and total expenditure) will be tested regression models of the multiple linear, with the outcome of the per capita expenditure on health and as explanatory variables BMI categories the average household, and the proportion of subjects with overweight and obesity at home.
