Abstract

We recently demonstrated that in competitive futsal matches, the cellular component of the players' innate immune system is affected, as evidenced by neutrophil dysfunction, and in its humoral components, by changes in acute phase proteins, cytokines and complement system proteins. Although it is known that high intensity exercise causes immunosuppression, the signaling mechanisms and their implications for the athlete's health are still uncertain. Thus, the purpose of this project is to study the activation, function and death of lymphocytes in athletes before and after a competitive futsal match. The number of leukocytes will be determined from hemograms. The occurrence of lymphocyte death will be assessed based on the cell viability assay, DNA fragmentation assay and expression of CD95 and phosphatidylserine by flow cytometry. The proliferative capacity of lymphocytes, production of reactive oxygen species and activation of expression/differentiation receptor (CD4, CD8, CD28, CD25, CTLA-4 and CD4/CD8 ratio will also be evaluated based on flow cytometry. The concentration of immunoglobulins A, G and M and the oxidative profile (antioxidant capacity, TBARS and LPO) in serum will be quantified. With these data, we intend to make an initial assessment of the mechanisms involved in immunosuppression after exercise and thus provide important data for interventions aimed at preventing infections arising after competitive matches, thereby improving the athlete's health and performance.
