Abstract

The Sierra de La Ventana occurs at the southern edge of the Rio de La Plata Craton, SW region of the Buenos Aires Province forming a fold and thrust belt oriented approximately NW-SE that exposes the Tandilha System outcrops. This belt is about 180Km long with 60 km wide and has been correlated with South Africa since the pioneering work of Keidel (1916) and cited evidence of continental drift by Wegener (1924). This project intends to continue with the program of detrital zircon studies from the lower Paleozoic units of the Sierra de La Ventana and Claromecó Basin, using LA- ICPMS. The studies aim to define the desired paleogeographic implications and tectono-sedimentary evolution of these units during the period mentioned a key range of time for the Western Gondwana formation. The results allow to calculate the maximum ages of sedimentation, characterize the source area of the sediment supply, dating exhumation-erosion ratios and making local and regional stratigraphic correlations resulting in an important complement to the constructions of the paleotectonic models.
