Abstract

Nasometry is indicated as an important method for instrumental assessment which provides quantitative data regarding speech nasality and can be used to confirm auditory-perceptual findings. Nasalance normative data has been presented in different languages, including Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and, in general, studies have showed that factors such as age, gender and phonetic composition of the speech stimulus interfere with nasalance values. Considering the universal tendency in selecting speech stimuli for perceptual assessment that meet the recommendations of the universal parameters (HENINGSSON et al., 2008), it is proposed that these stimuli are also used for nasometric measures. The goal of this study is to obtain normative nasometric values for specific speech samples that will be used nationally for Brazilian-speakers as well as to determine whether nasalance values differ significantly between different speech stimuli as well as in relation to gender and age of subjects. Nasalance measures will be obtained simultaneously with audio-recording of speech produced by 240 subjects (60 children, 60 adolescents, 60 youth and 60 adults) of both genders and with normal speech. The speech stimuli include 17 short sentences, a simplified passage and a protocol proposed by Trinidad et al. (1997). Speech samples will be obtained by asking the subject to repeat the stimuli. The audio signal (for database) will be captured simultaneously with nasalance measures (Nasometer 6400). The mean (standard deviation) of nasalance will be obtained and the results will be statistically analyzed in order to compare findings within and between groups, taking into account the speech stimuli, the gender and age of the subjects.
