Abstract

The Archival Science and archives are not static or immutable, because his story is presented in constant evolution. The Archival Science went through three main phases: syncretic/custodial, technical/custodial and scientific/post-custodial. The phase syncretic/custodial extended from the early eighteenth century until the nineteenth century. During this time the Discipline was configured as an auxiliary field of History, strongly linked to Paleography and Diplomatic and targeted to a specific object: custody of historic archives. The phase technical/custodial was characterized by progressive independence of historiographical techniques and also by the consolidation of a theoretical corpus itself. In 80 starts the phase scientific/post-custodial and which is the approximate the Archival Science area of the Information Science area and at the same time consolidating its own foundations and principles. Moreover, this phase, technology development substantially changed the think and doing archivistic. If currently we experience the scientific/post-custodial phase, the central question is: what are the elements that indicate in fact the archival society has reached of scientific stage? From this perspective, independently of intrinsic and/or extrinsic factors to the area, it is important to study these elements manner which would assist affirm the scientific stage where Archival Science is.
