Abstract
The development of networks for converged services including voice, video and data over the same infrastructure to route traffic for multi-service scenarios, requires proper planning and proper design of such networks. The main network applications can be classified into two major groups of traffic: stream, which have strict requirements of time (eg, VoIP) and elastic, which support an acceptable delay but not loss (eg, FTP, TELNET and HTTP). This paper presents a methodology for dimensioning the service of multiservice IP links with QoS requirements, in which the discrete event simulation is essential (the approximate analytical models are not enough for this purpose). The dimensioning also implies that the QoS requirements and the characteristics of the link (channel) are known. In this paper we propose an extended model for the design that can also be applied to a VPN (Virtual Private Network), in which the unknown characteristics of the link (channel) are obtained by means of emulation.
