Abstract

In this work we investigate new descriptions of spin-2 particles which have been recently suggested in the literature and futher suggestions to be made here. The problem is addressed from two point of views. First we try to classify physically sensible theories in D=4 dimensions starting with a 2nd rank tensor with at most two derivatives in the Lagrangian (2nd order models). In the second approach we include fourth-order (in derivatives) models recently suggested in the literature. They are known as "New Massive Gravity" and $New Massive 4D Gravity" in D=3 and D=4 respectively. We are interested in fourth-order models where all graviton modes propagate in convenient way for large momentum (ultraviolet) in order that end up with a candidate to a renormalizable theory after including self-interactions. The addition of nonlinear terms (self-interaction) and their consequences on unitarity and causality of the starting free models as well as the geometric interpretation of such term will be investigated in detail.
