Abstract

The aim of this study is to use the Operating Microscope as diagnosis method of dental caries in cleft and lip palate patients through ICDAS-II systems. One hundred children will be selected, aging from 6 to 9 years-old, at mixed dentition, with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (right or left). The teeth at cleft lip and palate area will be assessed. The first assessment will comprise the clinical examination of the dental surfaces previously cleaned by dental floss and dental prophylaxis with pumice and tergentol with aid of a rubber cup and a WHO dental probe, under the light of a dental reflector, after air-drying for 5 seconds. The second assessment will be performed under magnification through Operating Microscope as diagnosis method of dental caries. In the assessments will be used the scores of a visual clinical system of classification for using in clinical practice (ICDAS-II). The assessments will be executed by two examiners previously calibrated and trained. Following, the data will be recorded on specific and individual charts for each patient. In the description of the results, it will be employed tables and graphs with absolute and relative values. The level of significance will be set at 5%. (AU)
