Abstract

Hospital infections are a known phenomenon and effective measures for their prevention are well studied. However, the implementation of these measures is the biggest challenge today. Notification of nosocomial infection rates in intensive care units (ICU) is compulsory in the State of Sao Paulo. During 6 years the rate of infection remains stable at a higher level than is desirable. The aim of this study is to assess intervention measures in a sample of hospitals in the state in reducing rates of bloodstream infection in ICUs. A sample of 54 hospitals was included in the study. There was an assessment of the knowledge of healthcare workers (HCW) on the subject using questionnaires and assessment of practices by direct observation of practices in the ICU. After this period a set of six interventions was suggested to be implemented in each ICU. In the following period further assessment of knowledge and practices was performed. Currently the database with this information and infection rates of the hospitals is underway and data analysis will begin. Our objective is to determine the characteristics and more effective actions associated with reduction of infection rates. (AU)
