Evaluation of the effectiveness of bromadiolone-rodenticide formulated as parafin block in control of Rattus norvegicus captured in different regions of the São Paulo city and verification the occurrence of resistence to this active ingredient

Abstract

Rodents are an important public health problem and its control involves the management of the environment, the orientation of the population and the use of chemical rodenticides in different formulations. Among species of urban rodents the control of Rattus norvegicus, is of great importance because this species is the main in the transmission leptospirosis to the man. Chemical control of this rodent involves the application of coumarin rodenticides with different active ingredient and different formulations, among which stands out the use bromadiolone formulated as paraffin block. This formulation has been suitable for the environment occupied by Rattus norvegicus, since it resists to moisture. The blocks are placed in culverts and similar sites for the animal to ingest and enter in contact with the toxic agent, but after a few days in the environment they have their altered appearance creating doubts its effectiveness in control, leading his changing each 7 days, increasing the work of the zoonosis agents and waste generation. In order to optimize the use of this product, this paper aims to assess the consumption and efficacy of paraffin blocks containing bromadilona, exposed for 30, 60 and 90 days in culverts. For this not-exposed blocks and exposed-blocks to environmental conditions will be offered to rats Wistar and Rattus norvegicus captured in areas with socio-economic and environmental different, both in tests with option-food. Also will be tested the physical and chemical in the not-exposed blocks and exposed-blocks, to identify possible changes that indicate the influence attraction and palatability. Although molecular analysis will be done to assess resistance to bromadiolone captured animals. (AU)
