Abstract

The purpose of this research project is to develop a concept o remote wireless oximetry data acquisition. The use of emerging wireless technology, especially Bluetooth has proven to be a good mean to sense the patients' activity, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, internal pressures, orthopedic devices loading, and gastrointestinal endoscopy. The goal of the effort of this project is to develop a personal portable monitoring system, consisting of three components: the sensor and the corresponding acquisition system, called here oximeter and control system, a Bluetooth module and a datalogger (PC station). The PC station will be the master of the system and will control de requisitions for the data acquisition. This will be done using commercially available oximetry sensors, managed by a processor to be defined. After acquisition the blood oxygen saturation data will be sending to the PC station by the Bluetooth module. The data acquired by the system and stored in the datalogger will be available locally for physicians or they can be send further via internet, intranet or even by cellular phone. Once the concept is developed more sensors could be added to the system as the technology Bluetooth allows the establishment of piconets with each new sensor being a new member. (AU)
