Abstract

Hippocrateaceae comprises ca. 300 species and 24 genera in the tropics and subtropics in both the Old and New Worlds. In Brazil, 12 genera and ca. 70 species are known. The status of Hippocrateaceae as a taxon has changed along the time, and although it was sometimes included among Celastraceae and sometimes recognized as a distinct family, recent molecular data have confirmed their inclusion among Celastraceae as a monophyletic group. Hippocrateaceae usually include revolute lianas and sometimes shrubs or trees; they are woody plants with opposite, sometimes alternate, simple leaves, with entire to serrate, petiolate and stipulate margin; their cymose, axillary inflorescences bear small, dichlamydeous and regular, bisexual flowers, with extrastaminal nectariferous disk, 3 to rarely 5 stamens with transverse to longitudinal anthers, 3-carpelar and 3-locular pistil. Each locule contains 2 to 14 ovules; fruit is dry, 3-lobed, dehiscent or indehiscent or even a drupe with thickened exocarp, and winged or angled seeds, without endosperm. Since the works by Peyritsch (1878) who emphasized the Brazilian flora and by Smith (1940), who included the Americas, no other work has been carried out on all the families of this species in the Neotropics. Few other revisions have been performed recently, but were limited to regional or national floras. As all liana family with a great number of voluble species, which are all notoriously under-studied and under-sampled, Hippocrateaceae needs a revision in the Neotropics, whose elaboration, included in the Flora Neotropica project, is performed by the author. Between 2000 and 2004, while working as an Associate Professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais Botany Department ca. 5,000 vouchers from national and foreign Herbaria were reviewed and 87 species and 1 subspecies were recognized...
