Abstract

The goals of this research are to study sugarcane orbital hyperspectral behavior and to estimate some of its canopy chemistry components through hyperspectral data. Spectral variables (simple bands, ratio of bands, and hyperspectral indices) will be correlated with canopy and leaf structural differences, with biochemical variables, and with technological quality of five of the main Brazilian sugarcane varieties cultivated in São Paulo State. Hyperion/EO-1 image was acquired in June, 2004 and technological variables, canopy structural variables, and some of the biochemical variables (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids) were determined at the image acquisition time. Leaf samples were properly stored for future determinations of the leaf structural variables, and of remaining biochemical variables (lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose, protein, micronutrients, and macronutrients). Multiple regression analyses and correlation between the biochemical analyses data (dependent variables) and the hyperspectral vegetation indices (independent variables) will be done in order to estimate canopy chemistry components.
