Abstract

We intend to develop a methodology based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to help the design of rabies vaccination campaigns in a certain locality. The animal (canine and feline) population for each census sector will be estimated using a census database for the human population and also estimates for the human:animal ratio. It will be possible to estimate the number of doses for different vaccination coverage in each census sector, and also to optimize the spatial distribution of units of vaccination, based on the analysis of animal density maps. The methodology will be applied to data from the City of São Paulo, due to the availability of estimates for the ratios human:dog and human:cat. One of the goals is, in a given region, to distribute spatially the vaccination mobile unities in order to optimize the allocation of human and financial resources, besides making it easy for the population to reach the vaccination unities.
