Systematics, evolution and diversification of the subfamily Sigmodontinae in South America: the tribe Oryzomyini

Abstract

The tribe Oryzomyini is one of the most diverse clades of subfamily Sigmodontinae, harboring nearly 30 genera and 130 species. Modern definition of this tribe includes sylvan and pentalophodont forms, but also pastoral and tetralophodont taxa, which represents a dramatic shift on the classic paradigm. Despite these advances, some issues on the evolution of the subfamily, as the mesoloph evolution and its relationship with forest-pastoral transition, remained to be fully studied. Among other facts, this reflects the lack of knowledge on the genus and species diversity and definition, what precludes the establishment of phylogenetic hypothesis and the understanding of diversification mechanisms in South American forests. Therefore, this proposal intends to study the rodents of tribe Oryzomyini, aiming a better knowledge on its taxonomic diversity, and evolutionary and biogeographic patterns regarding Brazilian and South American groups. These objectives will be reached through taxonomic reviews of some genera, based on the examination of extensive series of specimens that will be obtained from: field inventory (in order to obtain better samples, both qualitative and quantitatively, and important data on natural history, such as spatial distribution, habitat affiliation and reproductive biology) and museum collections. These geographic samples will be analyzed throughout transects to detect discontinuities among populations, aiming to recognize the valid taxa. Besides the taxonomic effort based on morphologic markers, we will employ molecular markers to evaluate the phyletic relationships among geographic samples (phylogeography) and species (phylogeny), intending to identify and understand the mechanisms and timing of diversification of such groups in South America.
