Abstract

Land occupation and encampments organized by the so-called movements (social movements) are a new aspect of the struggle for land in Brazil. Since the 1990s, the occupation-encampment formula has become one of the appropriate ways to demand land reform from the Brazilian state. That is, if the demands from the rural worker's organizations (movimentos) are to be met, there has to be land occupations and, above all, encampments. A few and recent academic studies have focused on land occupations and encampments prioritizing the point of view of men and women who make the land occupations possible and who experience daily life in the encampments. Although encampments follow a particular model of organization, an "encampment form" as Sigaud (2000) has demonstrated, encampments of black tarps presents certain characteristics that comprise variations of that model. These characteristics depend on the movement which organizes the encampment, on the social trajectories of its leaders, on the origins and socioeconomic characteristics of the families who install themselves under the black tarps (debaixo da lona), and on the, social, economic and political characteristics of the region where the encampment is organized. These variations or distinct characteristics constitute encampment forms. This project aims to verify and analyze the many encampment forms in the state of São Paulo as well as the social conditions that allow its replication. (AU)
