Abstract

Traditional ceramics industry uses a variety of dyes and pigments in ware decoration. As a rule, the need to keep the number of pigments to a minimum has been met empirically, resulting in an optimized colour pallet which satisfies the decorative demands of ceramic glazes and enables the highest variety of colour shades. The main objective of this work is the development of a methodology to foresee, preferably during the graphic stage of the design process, the final colour shade, without the trial and error procedure so common today. To begin with, experiments will be carried out combining pigments, glasses and additives for glaze application, typical of a variety of ceramic products. Processing parameters, such as application technique, substrate type (dry or wet production) and heat treatment, will be investigated. The resulting glazes will be characterised, using a reflectance spectrophotometer, in terms of colour and brightness, in order to set up a database of colour coordinates. With this database, a model will be derived to enable a correlation, within the colour space used, between the expected glaze colour shade and that used in the graphic design. Finally, some graphic designs will be used as case studies, seeking the validation of the proposed model. (AU)
