Study of Photosensitivity and photoluminescence in organically modified silicates films prepared by sol-gel

Abstract

Sol-gel method is a useful synthesis technology for preparing new functional materials such as glasses, films, and dense ceramics or fine powders at room temperature. Through this wet chemical method, organic/inorganic compounds (rare earth/organic complexes and organic laser dyes) can be successfully doped into SiO2 sol and gel matrix to prepare novel materials for optical and optoelectronic applications. Organically Modified Silicates (ORMOSIL) are extensively studied due to the great variety of silicon alkoxides functionalized with organic molecules (epoxy, vinyl, amine, phenyl, etc) allowing production of new silica matrix with adjustable properties by embedding organic molecules into the SiO2 structure. Recent results showed that ORMOSIL matrix obtained from 3-Glicidoxipropyltrimetoxisilane (GPTS) and Viniltrietoxisilane (VTES) associated with Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) are excellent hosts to photosensible azodyes and photoluminescent chromophores. The study of Organic/Silica hybrid Films doped with Photosensible Azodyes and Photoluminescent Chromophores prepared by sol-gel is of high scientific and technological interest due to its optical and mechanical properties which can be tailored from the sol-gel synthesis yielding novel functional materials possessing hybrid characteristics arising from the organic/silica synergistic interaction associated to the optical phenomena created by the dopant introduced in the new matrix. The goal of this project is: 1) The study of hybrid films of GPTS and VTES associated to TEOS doped with azodyes (DR1, DR13, MR, MO) and the investigation of the photoinduced effects characterized by UV-VIS optical absorption and ellipsometry. 2) The study of hybrid films of GPTS and VTES associated to TEOS doped with photoluminescent chromophores (Eu3+, Tb3+) and the investigation of the luminescence by UV-VIS photoluminescence and optical absorption techniques, and ellipsometry. 3) Improvement in the infrastructure for films preparation in a dry glove-box chamber with controlled atmosphere, yielding films with superior surface quality.
