Abstract

The genetic variability that can be obtained through soma variation and from mutation induction is useful in improvement, especially in the case of plants of vegetative propagation such as banana and citrics. With a view to its possible use as a new cultivar, we will evaluate during 3 cycles, in 3 locations, a soma variant of low-height banana plant, selected from among the Nanicão cultivar. Mutants of the Pêra orange cultivar obtained through gamma rays will be evaluated in 16 production trials for 4 years, aiming to determine its commercial potential with new clones. In the two crops, molecular markers will be used to identify polymorphisms associated with phenotype modifications and also for a possible future use in early selection of similar types of variation and mutations. A multi-disciplinary team from CENA, ESALQ, Agronomy Institute, Biological Institute and UNESP-Ilha Solteira will participate in the project in the field and laboratory phases. Researchers from abroad will be brought in to collaborate on the project and in the final phase, banana and citric producers will visit the trials to evaluate the materials. (AU)
