Obtaining and evaluation of new varieties of scion and rootstock for citrus

Abstract

Although the citriculture is one of the most important economic activities in Brazil, it is based on a small number of varieties. This fact has contributed for the vulnerability of the culture regarding the phytosanitary problems. A higher number of varieties/genotypes with potential for commercial growing, either for the industry or fresh market, has been one of the main objectives of citrus breeding programs. The Agronomic Institute of Campinas through Sylvio Moreira Citrus Center has been responsible for the selection and improvement (via production of necellar clones and cross protection against citrus tristeza virus) of almost all citrus cultivars used in São Paulo state and Brazil. To achieve this goal, the researches are constantly evaluating the plants of the Active Germplasm Bank of Citrus started in 1928 and currently has around 1200 access of gremplasm introduced from other states and countries. On the other hand, the Citrus Center Sylvio Moreira / IAC has been performing since 1997 a program of genetic improvement of citrus via controlled crosses. Populations of hybrids obtained from crosses between different varieties of citrus, selected by molecular markers have been established in several regions of São Paulo, as an experimental network of new genotypes. This project proposes to continue the work developed by researchers in the group of Citrus Improvement in Sylvio Moreira Citrus Center / IAC in obtaining and evaluating the new materials and access of the Active Germplasm Bank and the hybrids in field experiments. Its main objective is to obtain and evaluate new varieties and hybrids for scion and rootstocks for diseases resistance, physical and chemical characteristics of fruits in different soil and climatic conditions in competition trials with commercial varieties, aiming at release of new cultivars and expanding the genetic base of the cultivars of fresh fruit.
