Abstract

In the last few decades, a mother's psychological state during pregnancy and puerperium has been a focus of concern for researchers and health care services due to the effect that it can have on children's cognitive and behavioral development. Considering the relevance and the scarce literature related to the risks that maternal mental conditions and the moments when children have been exposed may pose to their development, the present longitudinal study aims at evaluating maternal stress, anxiety and depression from pregnancy to the first postpartum year, their relationship with care-provision practices and with children's development at two moments (at six months and at one year. The mothers will answer depression (BDI), anxiety (IDATE) and stress (ISSL) inventories in the third pregnancy trimester and at six and twelve months postpartum, when they also will answer a parental-practice questionnaire (E-CPPC). The children development will be evaluated by Denver II at one and twelve months. The data will be statistically treated by comparing mothers' mental state and children's development at the two moments. Possible associations between maternal mental conditions, care-provision practices and child development will be searched for. (AU)
