Abstract

The taxonomy of Neotropical cholevine leiodids greatly increased during the 1990s, when methodologies were developed as well as a very rich collection was established for study in the applicants lab, allowing the description of genera and several species. At that time, in addition to the description of species belonging to the tribes Anemadini and Eucatopini, the applicant started a revision of the genus Adelopsis (tribe Ptomaphagini), recognized as a non-monophyletic taxon, leading to the recognition of more than one hundred undescribed species, from which more than 30 were described, as well as four new genera were also described. However, the study was interrupted and the Neotropical leiodid fauna received little attention in the following years, reflecting the need for taxonomists specialized in these beetles. This application aims at the development of the taxonomic study of the genera Adelopsis, Paulipalpina and Parapaulipalpina, and, if possible and needed, the description and revision of species and other genera as well. It is expected the description of at least 80-90 species already recognized as undescribed species, as well as the study of unsorted material, including a total of more than 5000 specimens available for study. Field trips to collect specimens as well as visits to museum collections may be done if considered needed, in order to increase the geographic and taxonomic range of the study. Therefore, we expect to reestablish the study started in the 1990s and allow the establishment of a new generation of specialists in the family, which counts with a very small number of researchers even in the whole World scale, although having a very large potential for study, which could be taken from the numbers previously presented.
