Feasibility of parasitism by Haemonchus contortus in cattle experimentally infected

Abstract

Infections of bovines by H. placei and H. contortus can cause prejudice to production. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the infectivity of H. contortus for bovines and compare its pathogenicity to H. placei. To achieve that, 14 calves created and kept free from contact with helminthes will be used, distributed in four groups: GI - four calves inoculated with H. placei infecting larvae (L3), GII - four calves infected with H. contortus infecting larvae (L3), GIII - four calves inoculated with Haemonchus contortus + Haemonchus placei infecting larvae (L3) and GIV - two non-inoculated calves (control). Each bovine will receive 3000 L3 from the respective Haemonchus specie during seven days. Coprological exams (McMaster and coprocultures) will be conducted daily after the seventh post-infection day, in order to establish the prepatent period. After 30 days post-infection, depending on the EPG counts, all 14 animals wil be euthanized and necropsied, collecting the Haemonchus specimens "in totum". On the abomasums, anatomical and histopathological exams will be conducted. (AU)
