Abstract

Endurance athletes performance is associated to high levels of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max). However recent researches have shown that the VO2 max is not a good predictor for this kind of competition, because athletes with similar VO2 max can present distinct performances. For a more accurate evaluation, running economy is used in the study of endurance athletes, even if they have similar VO2 max values. The increased oxygen consumption in these athletes can heighten the production of free radicals whose excess cause cell injury activating the immune-inflammatory response which can negatively influence the performance of the athlete. The aim of this study is to investigate the correlation between oxidative and immunologic profiles induced by extenuating exercise with running economy in marathon runners. (AU)
