Abstract

The implementation of the Network for Monitoring Coastal Benthic Habitats (ReBentos - SisBiota Brasil - Proc. FAPESP 2010/52323-0) took place in 2011 within the Subnet Coastal Zones of the Brazilian Climate Network and the National Institute of Science and Technology for Climate Change, aiming to evaluate the effects of regional and global environmental changes on biodiversity of Coastal benthic habitats. However, although research on climate change in Brazil has receiving increasing support in the last decade at the National (CNPq) and State (e.g. FAPESP) level, research into Ocean Acidification (OA) is limited due to lack of human resources and laboratory facilities. Therefore, opportunities exist for BU and IOUSP to collaborate in developing a Brazilian OA centre of excellence in São Paulo State. Thus, the effort to promote and disseminate eco-physiological studies on global impacts of climate change, especially on ocean acidification, is strategic for the ReBentos and corresponds to the core of the FAPESP-BANGOR proposal. The proposed research project has been developed to be fully integrative so both BU and IOUSP will benefit equally from the project outcomes. (AU)
