Abstract

In recent years, alternatives to minimize the continuous increase in environmental pollution are being carefully studied. In Brazil, agro industries and biodiesel production generates a great amount of waste, thus, demanding researches on conversion of these wastes into higher added value materials. These strategies include the production of acidity carbon and activated carbon (AC) from agro-industrial residues and biodiesel byproduct and to apply it as catalyst for glycerol etherification with tert-butanol or isobutene. Based on the literature and earlier works, of AC will be prepared as to obtain a unique characteristic: high micro mesoporosity. In addition, a surface treatment with HNO3 and H2SO4 will be applied for insertion of acid groups, and finally its activity as catalyst in the etherification reaction of glycerol will be evaluated. This new catalyst will have its catalytic activity compared to existing commercial catalysts, such as Amberlyst, and also to literature data. (AU)
