Abstract

The purpose of the proposed project is to carry on a theoretical analysis on the propagation of compaction waves in cellular materials graded by their density. Analytical models will be developed in order to deepen understanding of the dynamic compaction of foam and other cellular materials under intensive dynamic loads. In contrast to the commonly used concept of a predefined densification strain, the latter will be sought as a function of the impact velocity and type of loading. Different loading conditions will be analyzed: an impact of a cellular block by a rigid mass, impact of a cellular block on a rigid wall and impact of two cellular blocks having different density distributions. FE models will be constructed to verify the predictions of the theoretical models. Particular attention will be paid to the energy absorption capacity of the material depending on the gradient function and load intensity. (AU)
