Abstract

Although the hydraulic jump is a subject largely studied in the literature, it still maintains a great interest among researchers, showing unsolved questions involving basic characteristics (geometrical and positioning characteristics, for example), which points to the necessity of more research in order to allow a better understanding on how these characteristics are established. The jump and the roller lengths are among the questions that need more enlightening (in the region of large scale turbulence), being no consensus among the authors about the definition of these parameters. The present project involves the development of experimental studies using ultrasonic sensors, which allow the acquisition of instantaneous data of the free surface flow. From these measurements, together with statistical analysis, parameters like the conjugate depths, the lengths of the roller and the jump, and turbulence variables will be analyzed. It is an original research on a classical theme, which indicated to be promising in previous studies of the author, allowing envision of innovative procedures of analysis and conclusions for this area.
