Abstract

Professor Julio Capó should arrive in September and commence operations in LTF (Laboratory of Phase Transformation). Initially he will participate in the assembly of the detection system (SME Magnetic Spontaneous Emission) and then training and advising activities involving instrumentation, measurement and detection of electrical signals. He will also participate in the discussion of the results to be obtained, as the physicist of the team, becoming co-author of the works that are produced. His participation is indispensable for the assembly of an experimental apparatus for detecting and measuring the transformation of austenite into martensite at the same time as it measures the temperature of the sample and its electrical resistivity. With these measurements it will be possible to follow the kinetics of transformation of austenite into martensite dynamically during cooling or alternatively, over time and during deformation of the sample. - The experimental apparatus is expected to be ready after the first two months, using existing laboratory resources in LTF. - In the following two months experiments will be run, initially targeting calibration and then the development of correlations between the results of SME and microstructural data (obtained by optical and electron microscopy). - Over the last two months, the final period of stay, we expect to work in the interpretation of experimental results and writing articles for conferences and helping advise thesis. The presence of Professor Capó will allow the assembly of apparatus for making laboratory measurements not only of SME, but also for resistance measurements and magnetic hysteresis, as prior experience in instrumentation at our research group is small. Will are planning also visits and measurement missions in other laboratories that deal with magnetic measurements in the campus, both at IPT and in IF-USP. Ongoing research in the period will thus have a dual orientation: Prof. Goldenstein, with regard to questions of metallurgy and phase transformations, and Prof. Julio Capó, regarding instrumentation for the acquisition and interpretation of electrical signals.
